Comprehensive Eye Exams

At True North, you’ll gain a clearer picture of your pet’s ocular health.

During your pet’s eye exam, a slit lamp biomicroscope (a portable microscope) will be used to pinpoint the exact location, nature, and severity of your pet’s eye disease. Using indirect ophthalmoscopy (a specialized headset and lens), your ophthalmologist will also examine the hard-to-examine light-sensing structures at the back of your pet’s eyes.

This information will be used to create a treatment plan tailored to your pet’s exam findings. Recheck exams will allow your veterinary ophthalmologist to precisely track your pet’s progress and modify treatment as needed.

In addition to the above exams, your True North team will perform tests to check your pet’s tear production, eye pressure, and corneal health. Our nursing team is skilled at acquiring accurate test results with low-stress handling.

Our screening exams help breeders identify eye disease within their dogs. These exams allow for informed decision-making and, ultimately, stronger, healthier lines.

For more information, please see the OFA Website.

Advanced Diagnostic Testing

Though we can often obtain all the information we need from our routine eye exams, sometimes your pet may need additional testing to get to the answers we are seeking. Thus, we are equipped to provide advanced diagnostic testing, with tests that include:

  • Electroretinogram
  • Chromatic PLR
  • Gonioscopy
  • Corneal Cytology
  • Eyelid, conjunctival, and other biopsies
  • Ocular Ultrasound
  • On site lab for in-house diagnostics

Ophthalmic Surgery

We are proud to offer surgeries performed by our board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist, Dr. Kim Hsu. A custom-built operating room is being designed for True North’s new space. This will house an operating microscope, a state-of-the-art cataract/retina machine, multiple ophthalmic lasers, specialized instrumentation, and anesthesia equipment.

While we await the construction of our new facility, we are pleased to partner with Winrose Animal Hospital’s anesthesia team to offer ophthalmic surgeries. In addition, for complex cases, we are thrilled to provide specialized anesthesia services to accompany your pet’s specialized ophthalmology care.

Vision Restoring Surgery

At True North, we love being a part of the magic that is restoring a blind pet’s vision. It is our favourite part of the job and one of our greatest passions.

We are currently building space to be able to perform complex, vision-restoring surgeries. We are looking forward to offering cataract surgery for the first time in Manitoba. We are also proud that our ophthalmology facility will be one of two retinal reattachment centres in Canada and one of just a handful in North America. Stay tuned for more details!
