Meet Our DACVO: Dr. Kim Hsu
Dr. Kim Hsu grew up in Calgary, Alberta. She is a graduate of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Dr. Hsu was immediately drawn to the intricacies of this tiny organ and the beauty of ocular surgery. It was clear that Ophthalmology was her opportunity to make a big difference for patients and their families.
Following vet school, Dr. Hsu completed a one-year rotating small animal internship at the Royal Veterinary College outside of London, UK. There, she spent a year learning from world-renowned specialists across multiple disciplines. Following the internship, Dr. Hsu returned to Canada to pursue a Master’s Degree at the Ontario Veterinary College. Her graduate research project studied the safety of anti-inflammatory eye drops in cats. Dr. Hsu then completed a 3-year specialty residency in Ophthalmology at Eye Care for Animals in the Chicago area. Following residency, she practiced in both the greater Chicago and the greater Philadelphia areas. Dr. Hsu is privileged to be one of only a handful of veterinary ophthalmologists across North America trained to perform retinal reattachment surgery.
After a decade of living in the United States, Dr. Hsu and her husband searched long and hard for a place to bring their family home to Canada. Though originally from Alberta, they felt that Winnipeg would be a great place to raise their family and were drawn to the sense of community in Manitoba. The name True North was inspired by Dr. Hsu and her family’s return to Canada.
In addition to seeing Ophthalmology patients, Dr. Hsu enjoys teaching and sharing her passion for eyes. She has been a featured speaker at the Illinois State Medical Association conference, the Pennsylvania State Medical Association conference, as well as the Veterinary Ophthalmic Surgery Meeting. She also contributes to the Veterinary Ophthalmology journal as a peer reviewer.
Outside of work, Dr. Hsu shares her home with her husband, three children, a small fluffy white dog named Molly, and a big orange cat named Mac. In her free time, Dr. Hsu enjoys riding her Peloton, relaxing outdoors, and spending time with family.
